After a several month hiatus, I’m happy to be blogging again, this time about a fun project I had the pleasure to work on earlier this year.

Sometime in the spring, my husband Robert, who was Justin Bieber’s tour photographer, was contacted by the father of a girl named Ellie Wessinger, a huge Bieber fan. Ellie and her best friend Lizzie Halper, both of whom had caught “Bieber Fever”, started writing a book about their idol. They wanted to self-publish and needed good pictures to go along with the text. After getting approval from Bieber’s team, Robert agreed to have his photos be a big part of the book and I was brought into the project as the designer.

The process of writing, proof-reading, picking 100+ photos (out of thousands from Robert’s archives) and designing the book took several months. By late summer we received the first color proofs and after a few weeks of revisions we were excited to have everything ready for the printer. Last month we were finally able to hold the first copies in our hands and couldn’t believe how amazing the final product looked!

The book, entitled “Got Bieber Fever?” and available on Amazon, makes for a fun read, describing the six stages of “Bieber Fever”, while giving some information that every Belieber should know about. It also includes letters from other fans, compatibility quizzes, and the dust jacket unfolds into a giant poster! I’m sure fans will love it.

For those interested, you’ll be happy to know that all the proceeds go to Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that builds schools in the developing world. Money raised just from the first print run alone will build TWO schools!

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July!

This year, Robert and I felt too lazy to go to the fireworks by the Hudson River, so instead we went up to our building’s rooftop and watched the show from there. It wasn’t the best view you can get, but it was better than we expected –and it only took us two minutes to get back home!

I can’t believe how long it’s been since my last blog post… It’s been a busy month.

About five weeks ago, Robert and I went on our late honeymoon to Menorca (also spelled Minorca), Spain, and it was the best vacation we’ve ever had so far.

Menorca is a relatively small island (695.7 km2/268.61 sq mi) but it has a lot to offer: stunning virgin beaches, breathtaking cliffs, beautiful little towns, prehistoric monuments, and excellent food. There’s so much to see that we didn’t have time to visit everything we would have liked. It’s alright though, I’m pretty sure we’ll go back someday.

Here’s some highlights of our trip:

Cala Macarella

Cala Macarella is a secluded cove on the south coast of Menorca. Cars must be left on a parking area from which there’s a 20 minute hike to the beach. The coolest part of visiting Macarella was the hike from there to another smaller cove called Macarelleta.

This was one of the first beaches we visited. Cala en Turqueta, which name makes reference to its turquoise waters, is a secluded cove in the south coast of Menorca. It’s in the same area as Cala Macarella, but the walk from the parking to the beach is a little shorter (10-15 minutes).

Binimel·là

Binimel·là is located on the north coast of the island, which has much different scenery than the south coast. This beach is not highly visited because there’s a better-known cove in the area, Cala Pregonda, which can be accessed only by foot (20-minute walk from Binimel·là) or boat.

Camí de Cavalls (Path of the Horses) is a medieval path that circles the island by the coast.

Cap de Cavalleria

Cap de Cavalleria (Cavalleria Cape) is the northernmost point of Menorca. It has the highest cliffs in the island and the only habitants in the area are wild goats.

This funny-looking goat came up to my car window and smiled for the photo.

Naveta des Tudons

Naveta Des Tudons is the most famous and best preserved megalithic chamber tomb in Menorca. The construction is 3000 years old and was used as a collective funeral monument.

Ciutadella is a beautiful historic town in the western end of Menorca and one of the two main cities in the island, along with Maó.

Maó

Maó is the capital city of Menorca and it’s located in the eastern side of the island. The history of this town extends over more than 3000 years.

Binibeca Vell

Binibeca Vell is a quaint development designed by Catalan architect Antonio Sintes in the 70’s. It was built to look like an old Mediterranean fishing village with a maze of narrow alleys, pretty white houses and a little harbor. Although it’s highly popular with tourists, it’s very quiet and laid back.

Cova d’en Xoroi is a bar located in a beautiful cliff on the south coast of the island and it’s a great place to enjoy a drink. At night it transforms into a disco/night club.

On one of the days during their stay, I took them to the Bronx Zoo. It was a weekday and most attractions were closed for the season, so the zoo was very quiet and not busy at all. It was nice to be able to walk around feeling like we were the only visitors.

I used to think parades were fun but as I’ve grown I’ve found them to be more annoying than fun. Drunk people, kids stepping on my feet and moms/babysitters pushing me with their strollers isn’t considered fun in my book.

Despite all the craziness happening around me, I managed to snap some pictures. I borrowed Robert’s Canon 5D Mark II and his 135mm lens, but had a hard time focusing on the paraders marching past –it would have been much easier if they weren’t moving so quickly past my position–. I’m pretty happy with my little photo-shoot though! Check out some of my pictures:

Here’s a compilation of random photos I took over those first few weeks in the city (Sept. – Oct. 2006); some have a touristy feel, some are random scenes I ran into, and some are things I probably wouldn’t notice today.

About a week ago I was asked to edit a video for the New York Times. It was for an article on tween idol Justin Bieber, who I hadn’t really heard of until Robert Caplin told me he had an assignment to photograph him at a concert last month at Madison Square Garden. He was asked to shoot still photographs only, but he decided to take some video footage as well, and it turned out to be fun content the NY Times ultimately wanted to include with their article about Bieber.

My job was to edit together the video footage and photographs that Robert captured during the concert, showing not only the concert itself but also the backstage going-ons and Bieber’s warm-up session with singer Usher.

When I first began working with the footage, I used several interesting video clips, but then I realized the photos Robert had taken worked even better with the audio captured from his videos. I ended up using around three dozen photographs in all throughout the 2.5 minute video, which I felt helped tell the story… after all, he was commissioned to shoot stills, so why not take advantage of them?

The funniest parts while editing the video was going through the footage of the young girls going nuts in the front row blowing out the sound levels. I also enjoyed Bieber’s walk through the halls in route to the stage when all the girls were clawing after him. In all honestly, I ended up getting a headache after hearing the screams over and over again during the few days it took me to edit the video. I could imagine there’s a bottle of aspirin in Justin’s mom’s purse!

This turned out to be a fun little project for me. Just like every time I edit a music video, the songs are now stuck in my head and I can’t stop singing “One Less Lonely Girl” and “U Got It Bad”! Ahhh, make it stop!
